Dear Parents –

Welcome to Walkathon 2016!  Most of you are veterans, but I want to give a clear explanation of this event and all of the excitement leading up to it!

WHEN is Walkathon? 

Friday, October 7 at 8:30 a.m. in front of the school.

WHY do we walk?

Twelve years ago, Walkathon was created at Ridglea Hills so we could have a huge community event that every child participates in to raise money. Frustrated by selling cookie dough, wrapping paper and other items that only profited 30-40% of the sales, the PTA Leaders came up with a brilliant idea of Walkathon, where 100% of all money raised goes right back into the school. We sell EXERCISE not junk!!! 

HOW do we raise money walking?

Students ask for donations from friends and family. Any donation is welcomed! ALL students, teachers and staff will receive a FREE t-shirt for the Walkathon. They will be available for parents and other family members to purchase for $10 each. (See the permission form). There are sponsor levels if a family or business wants to be recognized on the back of the t-shirt. (See the sponsorship form). Friends and family are very excited to learn that 100% of all money goes to the school!


WHERE are the forms?

They are online – starting now at the bottom of this page! All students will be given a packet with printed forms, collection envelopes and a permission form before September 7. The permission slip must be returned. 

WHERE do I send the money?


Money will be collected on Fridays (September 16, 23, and 30 and October 7) first thing in the morning. You may send cash or check in the envelopes your child will receive in their walkathon packet. Please put your child’s name and information on each folder so we know who to credit the donations to. You may also donate online here.


WHO Walks?

We ALL do! It’s amazing to see over 1,000 people walking for our school. We will have an organized route (maps will come home the week of walkathon) and provide water for all and even a Popsicle at the finish line! The route is approximately 1.8 miles long – for safety and security reasons; all students will walk one lap this year. It’s such a fun activity – you don’t want to miss. Parents will be done before 10:00 a.m. if you want to plan to go to work late that day. (***Children with special medical needs who cannot walk the route will ride in the walkathon, please talk to your teacher).

WHERE does the money go?

Ridglea Hills students are privileged to attend such an amazing school with great administration and staff. The PTA provides all of the amazing activities and programs that most FWISD schools don’t experience. Fine Arts Day, RIF Book Distributions, A/R Reading Incentives, Field Day, Hot Dog Supper, Talent Show and Chess Club – just to name a few. We also have plans this year to increase technology (more computers as well as programs), make playground and grounds improvements and add grade level reading libraries. If you have ideas for improvements, please attend a PTA meeting – all of our ideas start with one parent! 


HOW are the kids recognized for their donations?

Kids will be given a prize structure for levels they can achieve. The prizes are different this year in that every student who hits the top amount will get to attend the #horsepower party! Look for this in your walkathon packet and it will be posted very soon!


WHAT is RH Spirit?

We will be having many exciting promotions to get parents and students excited about walkathon. Spirit items ($1-$5) will be for sale during lunches various days through the month (watch for the schedule in the Pony Post eblasts!) and each Friday we will have a fun event on our collection days. There may be fun challenges and rewards – stay tuned! Anything can happen! All donations should be brought to the school on Fridays – and we will count the money and post our success each week! We have a goal to raise $45,000 for our school – which is approximately $67 for each student.

HOW can I buy a t-shirt?

Walkathon t-shirts are available online!  ALL students will receive a free t-shirt - this does not replace their order form.  If you want to order for adults/siblings that will be walking with your student - the t-shirts are available in Youth Sizes (XS, S, M, L) and Adult Sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL)  They are a dark gray unisex t-shirt with the walkathon logo on front and sponsors on back. All shirts are $10 (with a .50 convenience fee added) and will be delivered to your child's classroom the week of walkathon - please add your child's name/homeroom to the comments.
