A Few Words From Mrs. Cotton

Greetings parents, teachers, and students! I am so pleased with the great start we have had already! As I announced at Open House on September 4th, we are a distinction campus this year for outstanding academic achievement in Reading / ELA! We are also an exemplary campus under House Bill 5 with the Texas Education Agency, scoring excellence in at least 9 or more categories this past year from parent, administration, and counselor involvement to identification of our students who are identified as gifted and talented!

Only 6 campuses out of 142 schools in FWISD received an exemplary rating under House Bill 5 and Ridglea Hills Elementary was one of them! This is an endless result of continuous dedication from our staff, families, and community! My primary goal is simple:  student academic achievement.

There are a few points I would like for each parent to focus on so that we as a team can make this year the best one yet for our children:

1.  Read to your child daily, even if only for a few minutes.

2.  Encourage them to get a good night’s rest each school night.

3.  Use your child’s folders as a way of communicating with your child’s teacher. Emails are also encouraged.

4.  If there are any significant changes in the home, please communicate them with your child’s teacher and/or the administration staff.

My doors are open to talk to each and every one of you, about anything. Please contact the school at 817-815-1700 to schedule an appointment time.

P.S. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and many, if not all of us, have had a loved one or dear friend touched by this dreadful disease. To support the survivors and provide strength to others, I am asking all teachers, staff, students, and parents in our community to wear pink on next Friday, October 24th. We will send home a dress code policy for our students so they can wear appropriate clothing for school but still wear pink out of support. We plan to go around and take out of our learning community to show our support for real world issues that affects everyone!

Staff Spotlight:  Mrs. Ellie Starr, Assistant Principal

This is my 17th year in education. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Tarleton State University. I received my Master’s degree in Educational Administration from the University of North Texas.  I taught 3rd grade for six years, so I will always have a soft spot for third graders. I came to Fort Worth as an Assistant Principal. I spent 6 years at Diamond Hill ES and 4 years at Sam Rosen. I am so happy to be at Ridglea Hills and to be working alongside Mrs. Cotton. I already feel like a part of the family. J

I have been married to my husband Richard for 22 years. Richard teaches 4th grade at Luella Merrett ES.  We have two children. Lindsay is 21 and a junior at The University of North Texas. William is 20. He ships out for Air Force basic training on October 1. I also have 3 dogs…Max, Diesel and Romeo. My family is everything to me, and you will see them at school now and then.

Besides spending time with my family, I love to read and travel. I also love to shop and find a good bargain. J

I would love for parents to stop by my office anytime to introduce themselves and just say hi. I am so blessed to work with children. This is by far the best, most rewarding job in the world.

Ridglea Hills PTA is off to a fantastic start. Walkathon was a HUGE success, Mustang Muscle is working hard beautifying the campus, kids are enjoying Popcorn Fridays, and Reading is Fundamental (RIF) distributed wonderful books to all the students.  All of these great things are because of the generosity and dedication of our volunteers.  We have 318 members and that number could still grow.  If you haven’t had a chance to plug in, Carnival is right around the corner, so raise your hand, pitch in and let’s continue to make this a year that we all will remember!

Secret Buddies needed!

What is a Secret Buddy, you ask?  It’s a great way to treat our wonderful teachers and staff.  Here is some information:

**Your identity is a secret!  You will reveal yourself at the end of the year.

**You can give your Buddy a treat/gift at anytime--there does not have to be a special occasion to give something to them.  (Those surprises are more special anyway, right?)

**You will receive a detailed information sheet about the staff you select, so you can’t go wrong!

**Being a Buddy does not have to break the bank).  There are plenty of things you can get for her/him that are inexpensive--it truly is the thought that counts!

Walkathon was a

We had a hugely successful 10th annual Walkathon this year raising the most money ever, $48,598.11.  Mrs. Niehoff's class was the overall winning class.  Ava Allan was the overall winning student for the school.  We want to thank all of our business sponsors, family sponsors, and the individuals who contributed to our fall fundraiser as well as all those who volunteered their time and effort.  Our total was the result of many volunteer hours and financial contributions both big and small.

Special thanks to Frost Bank for providing our water station again this year. Special thanks to Camp Gladiator for providing the warm up before the race. Thank you to Mandy Thigpen and Chad Stewart for providing the snazzy rides for Mrs. Cotton, Mrs. Starr and Mrs. Niehoff, and Officer Salone for providing the police escort.  We also want to thank the Real Estate Council for hosting the Dodgeball Tournament in Ridglea Hills’ honor raising $3,000 for Walkathon.
